Blockchain spying has become a serious concern in the last few years. To address this issue, a team of privacy activists have launched Samourai BTC Mobile Wallet, an open-source project best known for its claims of providing a high level of privacy, reducing the chances of transactions or funds being frozen and the ability to be remotely retrieved or swiped.
Though currently running on Android alpha release, Samourai Wallet for mobile already provides impressive features such us Tor and VPN support, BIP 47 and Ricochet platforms, remote SMS commands, instant currency conversion or running the wallet in stealth mode. Nevertheless, the feature that seems to arouse most interest is the option of pushing transactions through users' own trusted nodes.
Company / organization behind the wallets
Founded in 2015, the company behind Samourai Wallet presents its team as privacy activists dedicating their lives to create a unique software. In Aug 2017 they got featured on the news by announcing the development and maintenance (in collaboration with Hidden Wallet) of the ZeroLink framework, which is to be implemented into the Samourai Wallet product as soon as possible.
According to its developers, Samourai Wallet benefits of military grade encryption, meaning that is encrypted on devices with AES-256 and never communicates with any server. For increased security, the wallet allows users to create a mnemonic passphrase and a PIN code with secured login, while also providing a private seed and possibility to run the app in stealth mode.
Summary:
What happens in the event of a disaster/theft/loss?
The user has a 'root key', 'recovery phrase' or 'word seed' that can be used to regenerate private keys.
Known as the "privacy-focused" wallet, Samurai is undoubtedly best suited for users who deeply care for the privacy of their crypto transactions. Its design is intuitive and transactions are easy to carry out, but the numerous features and the fact that is still in alpha testing make it mainly for advanced users.
Summary:
Samourai Wallet is most appealing for those seeking anonymity. There are various features that allow the user control over how their transaction is verified on the blockchain and how it is recorded. Most of the privacy features are unnecessary and too technical for the average user. Best suited to die hard privacy activists.
