Acoin is a cryptocurrency based on Bitcoin designed to be “rarer than gold”, and to be used as an “investment-grade” digital currency. The Acoin project was originally announced on Bitcointalk.org by a forum user named A-Coin on August 29, 2014.

Super Rewards

Acoin was marketed as a new SHA-256 based cryptocurrency with “super rewards and quick blocktimes”, which would have a variable coin supply from 800 thousand to 1.6 million Acoins, depending on a variable “random rewards system”. According to the original Bitcointalk post, Acoin would have a “super reward” system that could grant from 2 to 10 times the normal reward for mining a block, and the network would only need 6 confirmations to consider transactions valid. Acoin was designed to use Proof of Work as a consensus system.

At the moment of the launch, the Acoin team announced their currency could be mined using ispace.co.uk, coinking.io, miningpools.tk, and others. Plus, Acoin was allegedly available for trade platforms like Cryptsy, Coins-e, Allcrypt, Lazycoins, and Cryptorush but it is only currently available on YoBit and Cryptopia. The original post also offered a set of wallets compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, and Android.

Who's In Control?

The original Bitcointalk thread is still active as of September 2018, but according to community members, the project is not completely under control of its original developers, plus it appears that several modifications have been made to the original Acoin protocol. Bitcointalk user “MilkandPie4U” announced on the Acoin thread that the team has no active development team, and that he was in control of acoin.info, the Acoin GitHub, the Acoin nodes, and Acoin mining, while another community member named “Scuds31091” announced he ran the Acoin Slack Channel, the Twitter account, and an unofficial Acoin site.

The @acointeam account has not tweeted since March 4, 2015. The @acoinproject account, which sports the same Acoin logo, has twitted 3 times this year: once inviting users to download an “ACOIN wallet”, and twice inviting users to an Acoin telegram channel. The last tweet on this account was published on June 7, 2018.
